Fair Use and Misappropriation of Copyright Claims

Starting in the 2000s with the innovation of sites like Youtube people have been voicing their opinion on various media. In that time many people have made a career out of doing reviews and vlogs on youtube. But because Youtube is open to everyone it also allowed for people to post copyrighted material such as full movies and TV show episodes as well as the content created by other users and claim them as their own. So to combat this Youtube created an automated content ID system that will search videos for copyrighted material and either block them, delete them, or monetize them to the content owner. However this system has created problems for people earning a living off Youtube revenue by either wrongfully claiming videos that fall under fair use laws, being falsely claimed by scam artists who try to take advantage of the system, or simply reported by people who can’t handle an opinion on their own work. But over the past few months Youtubers have been fighting back against this sort of thing in the hopes of making Youtube a safer haven for opinions and creativity.

Assignment 3

Live Action / Animation Hybrids in Music Videos

Animation has been incorporated with music and music videos since the 60’s and 70’s with creations for Saturday morning cartoons such as Alvin and the Chipmunks,  The Archies and Josie and the Pussycats but as time when on it was used for bigger productions like in Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker. With the rise of MTV in the 80’s artists begane doing more experimental stuff with animation like in the video for Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer.

Then in 1989 we saw Paula Abdul performing along side a cartoon character.

The video became so popular that MC Skat Kat spun off into his own short musical career.

 This would later bring about other animated bands that would stand independently from real life artists and even have story lines to go along with their band such as Gorillaz.

And Canada’s Prozzak.

Until eventually one would even get their own TV show with Metalocalypse on Adult Swim.

My muffled room is muggy

Your happy school had odd family

Him wrinkly school have fuzzy woman

Assignment 2

While looking into multimedia databases in the form of video I was reminded of the into to a Comedy Central show called Kroll Show. The show stared stand up comedian Nick Kroll who stared in a series of sketch comedy bit that would make fun of things like reality television and infomercials. The into to the show is a fast paced collage of the show’s title interpreted as many logos of famous products, television shows, etc.

There’s also a slowed down version so the logos can be viewed better. The idea seems to be that the show is invading pop culture and can’t be stopped.

Assignment 1: Sistine Chapel

The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was painted in 1508 by the artist Michelangelo. It’s many sections portrays God’s creation of the heavens, the earth and Adam and Eve as well as the story of Noah. The sections around the edges portray the ancestors of Jesus, the prophets as well as other scenes from The Old testament. It is intended to be viewed from the front entrance to the back but the main entrance is no longer used and people enter through the rear and need to walk to the other end of the chapel to correctly read it.
